Gruenert Center is DPD's Adult Day Training program located in Lake Hopatcong, NJ. Gruenert Center offers a diversified experience to approximately 57 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through work opportunities, vocational training and educational opportunities.
The Center also offers recreational activities; social opportunities; prime manufacturing of ceramics; support for families; and groups including current events, a book club, an art group, stress management, a fix it group, performing arts and more.
Gruenert Center is named in memory of Paul Gruenert, the deceased husband of Special Education professor Dr. Marietta Gruenert from Paterson State College (now William Paterson University). Dr. Gruenert and Mr. Gruenert were pioneers in the field special education and the deinstitutionalization of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The program first opened on January 16, 1967 as a nursery for young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over time, the program evolved to provide educational and vocational opportunities to adults. In 1998, Gruenert Center moved to its current location in Lake Hopatcong.
